Kampala is the capital of Uganda. It is a very busy city with a lot of traffic. And you can smell it. But Kampala has a lot (but not very cheap) hotels and is situated 35 kilometers from the airport of Entebbe. It is the biggest city of Uganda, so you have the best opportunity to organize a trip through the country: there are many travel agencies. Our Tourist hotel was situated on Nakasero Market, one of the two biggest vegetable an fruit markets. However, the smaller markets are nicer to visit. When you show the people their self on the camera the people are very friendly and interested in you.

It is very interesting to watch the people make those beautiful drums, using very primitive tools. The boys of this workshop gave us a free drum demonstration.

Later on you could see those drums on the handicraft markets in Kampala town.

We enjoyed a (not touristical) traditional dance performance.

Kampala is de hoofdstad van Uganda. Het is een drukke stad met veel verkeer. Dat ruik je dan ook wel.  Maar Kampala heeft veel (duurdere) hotels en ligt op 35 kilometer afstand van het vliegveld van Entebbe. Als grootste stad van Uganda heb je er wel de meeste kans om een trip door het land te kunnen organiseren: er zijn vele reisbureautjes. Ons Touristhotel lag aan Nakasero Market, een van de twee grote groente en fruitmarkten. De kleinere markten zijn echter veel leuker om te bezoeken. Vooral als je laat zien wat je op je camera hebt opgenomen krijg je leuke kontakten met de mensen.

Heel interessant was te zien hoe men met hele primitieve gereedschappen deze mooie trommels maakt. De jongens vergastten ons op een te gekke drumdemonstratie.

De trommels kwam je later in de Kampala "handicraft markets" weer tegen..

We liepen tegen een traditionele (niet toeristische)  dansuitvoering aan.

Between Kampala and Entebbe you will find the Wildlife Education Centre. Started as a orphanage, it was gradually developed into a zoo. A few years ago in miserable circumstances, but nowadays it is a nice place to visit and still being upgraded. The animals now live in a natural surrounding with a lot of space. It is a good opportunity to see animals you normally rarely meet. We hoped to see the shoebill stork in Jinja or Murchison Falls NP, but we didn't. So we were glad that we were able to see these strange looking birds from a short distance in the WEC. The same story about the chimpanzees: In Kybale and Murchison Falls NP we only saw the chimpanzees sitting high up in the trees. In the Wildlife Education Centre we had a much better look on them.

Tussen Kampala en Entebbe bevindt zich het Wildlife Education Centre. Begonnen onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden als een opvangcentrum voor in beslag genomen en gewonde dieren in een beperkte ruimte, is deze "dierentuin" uitgegroeid tot een mooi park, waar de dieren in een natuurlijke omgeving zijn gehuisvest. Het is vooral een mooie gelegenheid om dieren te bewonderen die in je normaal gesproken niet of nauwelijks tegenkomt. Zo hadden we gehoopt de schoenmakersvogel (shoebill stork) bij Jinja of in Murchison Falls NP te kunnen zien, maar zijn achteraf we dus blij dat we deze vreemd uitziende vogels in het WEC hebben kunnen bewonderen. Voor de chimps geldt hetzelfde: In Kybale en Murchison hebben we ze alleen maar boven in de bomen gezien, maar een beter zicht hadden we in dit dierenpark.

Close to the WEC is the Botanical Garden. A nice place the walk around  and enjoy the beautiful flora and animals which move around freely here.

It was nice to see the hornbill feeding his wife and kids through the narrow opening of the nest.

In the park you will see a lot of black and white colobus monkeys. Nice and easy to photograph them.

The vervet monkeys are always looking for food. Sometimes they also empty the dustbins in the garden. In this park these monkeys are not shy at all and just walk towards you. Watch out if you want to photograph them, because they are very interested in your camera!!!

Vlakbij het WEC ligt de botanische tuin. Een mooi gebied om te wandelen en te genieten van de flora en de dieren die hier vrij ronddwalen.

Heel mooi was het te zien hoe de neushoornvogel zijn vrouwtje en jongen door de spleet van het nest voerde.

In het park zitten ook veel zwart / witte franjeapen. Een gewild onderwerp om op de kiek te zetten.

De groene meerkatten zijn altijd op zoek naar voedsel, en keren daarbij soms ook de afvalemmers in de botanische tuin om. In dit park zijn ze absoluut niet schuw en komen gewoon naar je toe. Als je ze op de foto wilt zetten zijn ze heel geïnteresseerd in je camera, dus let goed op!!!
